Markdown to plain text

Paste a Markdown file or open a .md file, and get the same text with the marks taken out, ready to paste into an email, a chat or a form. It is free and runs in your browser.

Your file stays on your computer. The conversion runs in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.

Converting…

Markdown to plain text keeps the words of a Markdown file in the same order and takes out the marks that format them, such as the # before a heading or the ** around bold text.

How to turn Markdown into plain text

  1. Paste your Markdown in the box, or choose Open a .md file, or drop the file on the box.
  2. Read the plain text in the box under the buttons. It changes as you edit the Markdown.
  3. Choose Copy text to copy the plain text, then paste it where you need it.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own computer. The page sends nothing about your file anywhere, and nothing is stored or logged.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert.

What does it remove?

Heading marks, emphasis marks, quote marks, code fences and backticks, and HTML tags. The words stay, and a list keeps a dash or a number before each item so the order still reads.

What happens to links?

The link text stays, with its web address after it in brackets, so nothing is lost when you paste. A link to a part of the same page keeps only its text. An image keeps its description.

What happens to code?

The code text stays as it is, without the fence or the backticks around it.

Is there a size limit?

Yes. A file over 5 MB is refused, and a file that takes more than two seconds to convert shows a message instead of text.

What is Sashmark?

A Markdown reader and editor for macOS, Windows and Linux, in development, at a planned $14.99 one-time.
