Markdown formatter
Paste Markdown or open a .md file, and get the same text back in one tidy style: # headings, - bullets, fenced code and one blank line between blocks. Copy it or save it as .md. This is a free page that runs in your browser.
Your file stays on your computer. The conversion runs in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
Tidying…
Preview
A Markdown formatter rewrites a Markdown file in one consistent style without changing what it says, so the file shows the same but reads more neatly as plain text.
How to format Markdown
- Paste your Markdown in the box, or choose Open a .md file, or drop the file on the box.
- Check the tidy Markdown and the preview under it. They change as you edit.
- Choose Copy Markdown, or Save as .md to get a file. Your browser saves the file.
- Any part that could not be tidied safely is kept as you typed it. The line under the buttons counts those parts.

Questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. The formatting runs in your browser on your own computer. The page sends nothing about your file anywhere, and nothing is stored or logged.
Is the Markdown formatter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many files you format.
Can the formatter change what my file says?
No. Each part is only rewritten when it shows the same as what you wrote, and the whole file is compared again at the end. A part that would show differently is kept as you typed it, and if the whole file would, all of it is.
What does it change?
Headings use #, bullets use -, emphasis uses * and **, code blocks use fences, and there is one blank line between blocks. In the parts it tidies, spaces at line ends go (except inside code), lines inside a paragraph are joined into one, and a forced line break becomes a backslash.
What is kept exactly as typed?
HTML written inside the Markdown, and links written as references with their reference lines.
Is there a size limit?
Yes. Markdown over 1 MB is refused. Tidying and the preview run apart from the page, and a file that takes more than 2 seconds is kept as you typed it, with no preview, so the page stays usable.
Is this the Sashmark app?
No. This is a free page that runs in your browser. Sashmark is a separate desktop app that is still in development.
What is Sashmark?
A Markdown reader and editor for macOS, Windows and Linux, in development, at a planned $14.99 one-time.
