Counting…

A Markdown check box is a list item that starts with [ ] when it is open or [x] when it is ticked, such as - [ ] Update the help page.

How to count the check boxes in a Markdown file

  1. Paste your Markdown in the box, or choose Open a .md file, or drop the file on the box.
  2. Read the count line under the buttons: how many boxes are ticked out of all the boxes in the file.
  3. Read the Blocked and Skipped lists first, then the Open list. Each box shows its line number.
  4. Choose Copy report to copy the count and the lists as plain text.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own computer. The page sends nothing about your file anywhere, and nothing is stored or logged.

Is the checkbox counter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many files you count.

Which check boxes does it count?

It counts list items that start with [ ] or [x], with any list marker, including boxes in nested lists and in quoted blocks. Boxes inside code blocks are examples, not tasks, so they are not counted.

How does it find blocked and skipped boxes?

An open box whose text starts with BLOCKED: or SKIPPED: goes in its own list, in upper or lower case. A ticked box counts as ticked whatever its text says.

Why is my count different from a text search?

A text search such as grep also matches boxes inside code blocks and lines that only look like boxes. The counter reads the file as Markdown, so it counts only the boxes in real lists.
